This is my best friend Lorie Asher.
It occurred to me that although my friend is awake and active after her accident, I should still keep pushing for people to donate. Her hospital bill is horrific and money should be the least of her family’s worries.
She was in a car accident in April during her Relay for Life lunch break and was ejected from the car. The brain trauma led to a two month medically induced coma, extensive therapy, several surgeries and a hospital bill of about $757,000.
She was an honors student at East Bay High School in Gibsonton, FL and was accepted into the University of South Florida back in February. She wanted to work towards the nursing program so that she could be a labor and delivery nurse. Because of the accident, she missed her prom, her graduation ceremony, and now her first semester of college.
Lorie is now blind and dealing with short term memory loss. We’ve been told her loss of vision is most likely permanent but only time will tell. I’m still extremely hopeful for her.
Our community has pitched in at our fundraisers (car washes, raffles, local businesses that donate percentages of their profit to her) and her father has set up a Facebook page where everyone can keep themselves updated with her progress. I’m posting a link to her Facebook page and website in hopes that other people can donate whether it be five dollars or a hundred. There are also Team Lorie bracelets, shirts and candy bars for sale! We’re doing everything we can but $757,000 is scary. If you can’t donate, you can still help by liking and sharing the Facebook page and our upcoming fund raising events. (Reblogging this post would also be a great help.)
Please take a moment to realize this could happen to you or any of your family members and friends- always drive safely and stay alert. Seat belts really do save lives.
